Nats top Rockies in 10

Baseball Betting Lines

07/20/2007 - Washington, DC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Pinch hitter D'Angelo Jimenez slapped a game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning as Washington edged Colorado, 5-4, in the opener of a four-game set at RFK Stadium.

Austin Kearns led off the 10th by singling to right off LaTroy Hawkins (1-5). Kearns then advanced to second on Brian Schneider's sacrifice bunt before moving to third when Hawkins uncorked a wild pitch. Jimenez then rifled a single up the middle to win it.

Jesus Flores drove in a pair of runs for the Nationals, who have won six of nine games. Ryan Zimmerman and Ryan Langerhans added an RBI apiece for Washington.

Matt Chico started on the hill and surrendered four runs on seven hits over six innings en route to a no decision. Jon Rauch (4-2) earned the win after hurling a perfect 10th.

Troy Tulowitzki and Garrett Atkins both hit two-run home runs for the Rockies, who lost for the first time in four games.

Ubaldo Jimenez, who was making his 2007 debut for Colorado, allowed two runs on four hits in five-plus innings of work as the starter.

The Rockies quickly went on top with a pair of runs in the first. Willy Taveras walked to lead off the game and Tulowitzki deposited his 11th homer of the year over the wall in left.

The Nats got one right back in the home half when Zimmerman plated Ronnie Belliard, who had walked, with an RBI double in the left field corner.

Colorado gained some breathing room in the fourth when Atkins blasted a two- run homer. After Todd Helton walked, the Rockies third baseman poked his 14th of the year over the fence in left.

Washington drew within two runs in the sixth. With the bases loaded and two down, Langerhans hit what looked like a double-play grounder to first off pitcher Matt Herges. However, Langerhans raced down the line and beat the throw, enabling Robert Fick to score.

The Nats finally evened things in the eighth off Jeremy Affeldt thanks to some shoddy defense in right by Brad Hawpe. Ryan Church got on with a one-out single and moved up 90 feet when Kearns was hit by a pitch. After Schneider lined out Flores, a pinch hitter, sliced a single to right that Hawpe misplayed badly, enabling both runners to score.

Game Notes

The Nats' Dmitri Young was tossed in the bottom of the third inning. The bulky first baseman, who is hitting .341 this season, was called out on strikes with runners on the corners and one down. Young began to argue with home plate umpire Rob Draje and was tossed as he walked back toward the dugout. Fick replaced Young in the lineup. Young was 0-for-1 in the game and ended a a 10-game hitting streak...This was the first meeting between the two clubs this season. Colorado won all eight meetings during the 2006 campaign.

Football Betting: Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.

Bet on NFL Football

Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.

Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.

Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.

Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.

All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.

A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
